The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) together with Fire and Rescue NSW intend to conduct a hazard reduction burn in Newington Nature Reserve on 5 March 2024. The burn is 4 hectares and is encompassed by Louise Sauvage Pathway and Hill Road to the east and south with Newington Armory, Jamieson Street and Holker Street to the west.
The burn is scheduled for 5 March 2024, however the scheduling is dependent on weather conditions so will be rescheduled to a later date (March to May) if conditions are not favourable. The burn is part of an on-going fuel management program to reduce the risk to the park and surrounding properties from potential wildfires in the area.
The burn is expected to take just 1 day, with mopping up operations continuing for two days to secure the entire area. The burn area is not normally open to the public. Public access to nearby Parklands areas including the Louise Sauvage Pathway and Newington Armory will remain open. During the burn you may experience periods of smoke and ash fall.
The risk to properties during the burn is low, however it is recommended that property owners ensure their properties are well prepared to reduce the risk from embers:
- Remove leaf litter from gutters
- Ensure pets are secure within your boundary and have areas that provide them shelter and protection
- Close all windows and remove washing from your lines on the day of the burn
- Stay well clear of fire operations during the burn
- If you have asthma or any respiratory condition, we recommend you stay inside or plan to be away during the burn period.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Cumberland Area Office of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on (02) 4580 2750.
